25 years ago: Three rescued from arson fire at Pinecrest Apartments

A morning fire at Pinecrest Apartments on Redbud Lane was described by Fire Chief Jim McSwain as a serious arson fire, the second in the building in recent weeks. It was unknown if the two fires had been related. Responders, arriving at 5:03 a.m., had discovered that three people — a man, a woman, and a year-old child – were trapped on the second floor. Firefighters raised a ladder to their window and helped them escape.

County commissioners unanimously approved a $148,500 agreement for a preliminary engineering study of the proposed highway bypass south and west of Lawrence.

Large crowds and muggy weather were both in attendance at the Fall Arts and Crafts Festival in South Park. An estimated 8,000 people visited the park for the art, crafts, music, food and drink. A “surprise” Canadian cool front moved into the area later that night, bringing temperatures from a daytime high of 96 degrees down to a sleep-friendly 61.
