Former Easton teacher given probation for sexual relationship with high school student

September 8, 2010

A former teacher in Leavenworth County who pleaded guilty to having sex with a high school student has been sentenced to probation for three years.

On Wednesday, a Leavenworth County District Court judge sentenced Shannon Young, 36, to three years of probation and an 18-month suspended prison sentence.

Young was sentenced on three counts unlawful voluntary sexual relations with a then-17-year-old student at Pleasant Ridge High School near Easton.

Young had no previous criminal history. She is to register for 10 years as an offender and receive a sexual offender evaluation and follow any recommendations from that evaluation, Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson said.

I am so glad that the state of Kansas is fair when it comes to male and female teachers having relations with students.

The student in this case was above the age of consent and the sex was evidently consensual. The crime, unlawful sexual relations, is a level 10 felony, the lowest level. Only persons with 2 or more person felonies (which, I hope, would exclude teachers) would be sentenced to prison. 12 months probation is the presumptive result for this case, regardless of the sex of the teacher.

If it was consensual sex with an adult, why is it a crime at all??

I think you might need to recheck the statutes on age of consent. Yes in ks a 16 year old has reached the age of consent but only if their partner is within 2 years of their age. The age difference restriction is lifted when the person reaches 18. Or at least that is how it was explained to me years ago when i was in high school.

Conservative, that is not correct. The age of consent for sex is 16.

If that is the case, then I don't understand how this teacher broke the law. Can you explain more?

There are laws against teachers having sex with students, regardless of age. It's an abuse-of-power thing.

The crime is voluntary sexual relations. K.S.A. 21-3520, I think is the number. The statute criminalizes sex in situations where one person is in a position of authority over the other. Correctional officer and inmate, for example. The concern is that the authority figure is abusing that authority. The teacher-student relationship is one of those covered by this statute.

This doesn't make it right, but the boy got his girlfriend pregnant and Young was the other woman. He's not messed up at all. She's even good looking. If anything the boy took advantage of her - she's obviously got some kind of emotional problems.

Note - I am not condoning this type of relationship. It was wrong. But she needs help, not him.

That's horrible... Wait, a female teacher? Nice.

Male teacher and he'd be in jail right now.

Wrong. The statutory sentencing guidelines call for probation.

Nope. She will not be able to get another teaching certificate with this conviction on her record.

10 years on the offender list, I thought that once you were put on this list, you were there for life. What gives here? Too many offenders to keep track of for "life"??
