40 years ago: Package of marijuana discovered on KU campus labeled as gift
A professional mediator from Washington, D.C., had arrived in Lawrence to begin a round of conferences with various groups concerning the previous week’s racially-oriented disturbances at Lawrence High School.
For the fourth time in recent days, a package of marijuana had been discovered on the KU campus. This one had been found near Haworth Hall, and like the others, it had contained a note saying that it was a gift to the finder from “the grass man.”
The new “Action Desk” at Lawrence’s city hall had averaged about one call for every 15 minutes on its first day of operation. Most of the calls were on such issues as sanitation and uncut weeds.
Kansas University Chancellor Laurence Chalmers acknowledged that it had been his decision not to give university recognition to the Gay Liberation Front at KU. He said that his decision reflected his assessment of “the validity of using student fees to support such an organization.”
