40 years ago: New bank alters downtown Lawrence’s skyline

A front-page photo revealed the new skyline of downtown Lawrence. The new First National Bank building dominated the view from Ninth and Massachusetts. The bank, which had previously occupied space at Eighth and Mass, had begun moving into the new building six days previously. Maupintour Associates was occupying the top floor, and city offices were scheduled to move into their new quarters around November 1 after vacating their offices at the old Watkins Bank building.

The Journal-World published the first entry form in their annual football contest. People were invited to mail in their predictions of the results of the weekend’s college football games. The winner would receive a 15-pound dressed turkey.

The structural steel framework of the new multi-million-dollar Kresge warehouse had completed, and work on the roof deck was scheduled to begin the following week. The project’s construction, which was right on schedule, would next involve the laying of underground conduit lines and drainage ducts.
