Knits are a comfy fit from the runways

Describing and recommending accessories is always a tricky task. Oftentimes, the same items stay in style for years, but they are not the same. They only share the same name. Like apparel, accessories are constantly altered and updated, the old twisted into something different and new. You can’t say “basic platform heel” to two women and expect them to picture the same shoe.

Luckily, this fall, a new crop of different accessories is taking the stage. Their unique shapes are easy to spot and can easily be integrated into your current wardrobe.

Read on for details on two new fall trends and some fun ways to wear them.

High-rise ankle boot:

First of all, every shoe lover should have a classic bootie in her closet for fall. The bootie is the go-to shoe this fall, perfect with trousers, long skirts and dresses; perfect with socks or without, with stockings or without. If you already own a comfortable pair of booties and are looking for an alternate pair that is a little bit unique, hunt for a high-rise ankle boot. These “boots” are an extension of the bootie and should hit right below the calf. Most high-rise ankle boots on the runway were fitted, not slouchy (with some exceptions, of course, like Marni’s bold, blue high-rise ankle boot). Also, unlike the classic bootie, wear your ankle booties with stockings, hidden trouser socks or socks that are only slightly visible, barely peeping out above the shoe. Anything higher will create awkward lines across your legs. Check out Calvin Klein, Narciso Rodriguez and Marc Jacobs Fall 2010 for some of my favorite high-rise ankle boots.

Knits:

Thick, chunky knit sweaters are a must-have each autumn. Stock your closet with short-sleeve knits, long-sleeve knits, button-up knits and knit vests for a variety of shapes and weights, perfect for layering on top of your favorite T-shirts and under cargo jackets or blazers. Even better, this fall, designers have taken the knit craze one step further. Look out for knit accessories and wool, cotton or cashmere linings on, well, virtually everything. Knit scarves, purses, gloves, boots, ankle warmers and stockings dominated fall runways. You’ll surely see this cozy fabric popping up in unusual places, perfect opportunities to add texture to your daily wardrobe. See Michael Kors, Prada and Christian Dior Fall 2010 for knit wrist warmers, knit stockings and knit ankle warmers.
