25 years ago: Some Regents object to bringing Washburn into system

Several members of the Kansas Board of Regents were objecting against bringing Topeka’s Washburn University under their authority, saying that they couldn’t afford to “bring another mouth to the table.” The idea was being studied because the state was funding about 23 percent of the college’s budget.

Preliminary figures were indicating an increase in overall elementary school enrollment compared to the previous year. However, four schools had fewer students than the previous year: Grant, New York, Riverside and Wakarusa Valley.

With only a couple of weeks until the official start of Fall, summer was getting its last licks in with temperatures topping 90 degrees for seven straight days. Wellsville school superintendent Don Martin decided to close school at 1:00 p.m., saying that the temperatures in school were “terrible.”
