Mrs. Russell Dittmar shed happy tears over an anniversary surprise planned by her husband. Mr. Dittmar had arranged for a small airplane to circle their Jasu Drive home, trailing a banner with a wish for a “Happy 25 Anniversary.” Mr. Dittmar, who worked at the post office, was very pleased with the success of his surprise. “I don’t know how he could top this at all,” said Mrs. Dittmar, when asked what her husband might have in store for their 50th anniversary.

Violent storms were reported to have raked the eastern half of Kansas, spawning at least two tornadoes and dumping more than four inches of rain in some areas. Coffeyville reported hail the size of grapefruits. One “captured” hailstone measured 17 1/2 inches in diameter and weight 1 pound 6 ounces.
