40 years ago: 11 high school students suspended following fights with racial overtones

September 3, 2010

Eleven Lawrence High School students were suspended from classes after incidents involving fights with racial overtones. Supt. Carl Knox released a statement saying that the school district intended to take firm action to maintain order.

The new Perry-Lecompton High School, which had been due to open when classes had begun the previous week, was now scheduled for completion in the first week of October. Meanwhile, about 250 students were “getting along very well considering everything” as they attended classes in the old Perry High School building. Some classes were being conducted in the teacher’s lounge and in the gymnasium.

An advertisement for a local “Wakeup Service” asked “Sleep Fitful? Worry that you won’t get up in time for the early shift? Let Kirk Wakeup Service ease your mind and help you get a good night’s rest.” The service was offered at the price of 25 cents per call, or $5 monthly.
