25 years ago: Women’s halfway house still looking for location

A group planning a halfway house for women recovering from alcohol and drug dependency was still looking for a new location for the program. City commissioners had turned down the group’s original request to use the properties at 906 and 908 Connecticut, citing the heated opposition from neighborhood residents [see OHT for Aug. 14, 1985]. A proposed site at 643 Rhode Island was also no longer under consideration, according to the program director. The group had received a $130,000 federal grant to operate the “First Step” program, which would serve up to 13 women and eight of their children, providing counseling and referral services for women who had already been through a hospital treatment program.
