Wichita ? Quivira National Wildlife Refuge has been closed to hunting until further notice due to the arrival of the whooping cranes.

The Fish and Wildlife Service says the closure is necessary to protect the endangered birds.

Refuge personnel will monitor the cranes’ location.

The refuge will reopen for hunting after the cranes leave.
