Veritas football moves to 8-0

Veritas Christian School’s football team defeated Wichita Sunrise, 50-42, to finish an undefeated regular season on Thursday night at Veritas’ field.

Nick Bennett completed 15 of 25 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for three TDs, including a game-clinching 15-yarder that busted a 42-42 tie with 3:35 left.

Ethan Scott rushed for 154 yards off 13 carries and caught five passes for 58 yards. He had three touchdowns and two two-point conversions, including one off a pass from Bennett to give Veritas its final two points.

Veritas came up with a defensive stand at the five-yard line with over a minute left to preserve the victory.

Nate Scott contributed 74 yards off 15 carries and had eight catches for 95 yards. He had one touchdown and a pair of two-point conversions.

Preston Randall had 10 tackles, and Kelvin Rask and Ethan Kay had seven apiece. Veritas at one point was down 22-6.

“Our guys got down early, and they didn’t give up and kept fighting,” coach Doug Bennett said. “We knew they were a good offensive team and would put up points and it would take us awhile to adjust. We stuck with it and hung in and had a good defensive stand, stopping the (late) drive. It was a great night, an awesome atmosphere. There was hard hitting on both sides. If you are a fan, you got your money’s worth tonight. There was a lot of offense the first half and a lot of defense the second half,” Bennett added.

Veritas (8-0) will play host to Flint Hills Christian in a playoff game at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Veritas. Veritas has homefield for the entire playoffs.
