40 years ago: Perry High students return to class following fire

In spite of the loss of many textbooks and office and laboratory equipment, Perry High School students were once again able to attend classes after their 50-year-old building had been destroyed by fire. Students and faculty had turned out to help move furniture from its storage location in the undamaged old school gym into the new high school building, which was nearly finished. The new building was not yet furnished with all kitchen equipment, so students were bringing sack lunches from home.

An underground gasoline storage tank had broken during a construction project at the Standard Oil Co. service station located at 601 Massachusetts. The old tank had been in the process of being replaced when it ruptured. Fire and police officials monitored the situation while the gasoline was removed from the old tank.

In St. Joseph, Mo., the mayor said that female city hall employees could wear pantsuits to work if they wished. “He admitted he didn’t have much choice in the matter, explaining, ‘My wife wears pantsuits.'”
