Topeka ? Westar Energy says it plans to build several transmission lines across the state in the next decade.

Westar officials say a new Kansas law requiring utilities to produce more electricity from renewable sources is prompting the need for an improved electrical grid.

Kelly Harrison, a Westar vice president, says wind energy projects in Kansas are being slowed by the state’s current grid of transmission lines.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that Westar did not set a timetable for any project. The projects will be coordinated through the Southwest Power Pool, an organization with members in Kansas and eight other states. The Kansas Corporation Commission would have to approve any new lines.
