Olathe man accidentally shoots self

A 22-year-old Olathe man went to the hospital Sunday evening after he accidentally shot himself in the leg northeast of Eudora, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Sgt. Steve Lewis, a sheriff’s spokesman, said Mitchell Garlach was in an area near the 1600 section of East 2300 Road picking pumpkins about 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Lewis said a friend had fired Garlach’s .22-caliber handgun once and it jammed a second time. He handed the gun back to Garlach, who then accidentally shot himself in the leg.

Lewis said friends took him to Olathe Medical Center, where officials notified the sheriff’s office of the wound. The injuries were not serious, and a hospital spokeswoman said Garlach was treated and released.
