Leavenworth police will not be charged in death of man after fight with officers

? The Leavenworth County Attorney says he will not file charges against police who were involved in a fight with a man who later died.

County Attorney Todd Thompson says the officers acted appropriately while they were subduing Edward Stevenson in downtown Leavenworth on July 18.

Leavenworth Police Chief Pat Kitchens says when Stevenson became combative, four officers used Tasers and physical force to subdue him. Stevenson became un responsive and died after an ambulance arrived.

The Leavenworth Times reports that Thompson says a forensic pathologist attributed Stevenson’s death to excited delirium, the altercation with officers and an enlarged heart. Cocaine and hydrocodone were found in Stevenson’s system.
