Kansas unemployment rate rose slightly in September

? Kansas’ unemployment rate rose slightly in September, but state officials still say there’s good news about the economy.

The Department of Labor reports that unemployment was 6.6 percent in September, compared with 6.5 percent in August. The rate in September 2009 was 7 percent. The numbers were adjusted to account for normal, seasonal trends.

Department of Labor officials note Kansas had about 1,100 more people employed in September than in September 2009. With more than 1.3 million Kansans working, the difference is one-tenth of 1 percent.

The department says six of 11 sectors of the economy saw job growth over the year.

But a growth in government employment was a key reason the state didn’t lose jobs.
