40 years ago: School bus collides with parking control officer’s scooter

Kansas University seniors presented the HOPE Award to James Koevenig, professor of biology and botany. The award, designed to “honor the outstanding progressive educator,” had been awarded annually since 1959. This was the first year that the award had been announced at the Homecoming game.

A Lawrence parking control officer was slightly injured when her motor scooter had collided with a school bus. The driver of the bus was cited for failure to yield at a stop sign.

Down in Norman, Oklahoma, the mascot “Little Red,” who had been banned from the university’s athletic events after campus Indian groups had protested against his degrading costume, was still dancing in the same brightly-colored outfit because of a loophole in the rules. The freshman in the mascot’s clothes had tried out for “rally leader” and the ruling was that anyone who tried out for cheerleader, in any costume, could appear if selected.
