Rollover accident near Hutchinson leaves thousands of boxes of sugar on U.S. 50, driver arrested

? It was not sweet when an accident left thousands of boxes of sugar on a Kansas highway.

Police say a semi-trailer truck rolled several times, dumping the boxes of sugar on U.S. 50 near Hutchinson early Thursday.

Hutchinson police Sgt. Bryan Stephens says the driver appeared to be speeding before the wreck. Fifty-nine-year-old Bernard L. McKinney, of Albuquerque, N.M., was treated for minor injuries and arrested for inattentive driving.

The Hutchinson News reports that the accident occurred on a curve that has been the site of numerous accidents. The state lowered the speed limit on the curve last year from 45 to 35 last year, and added a flashing light and warning signs.

The Kansas Department of Transportation says an average of more than 1,100 trucks use the road every day.
