100 years ago: Students seeking dates with telephone operators placed under arrest

From the Lawrence Daily World for Oct. 21, 1910:

“The reluctance of two telephone girls to take a midnight stroll last evening resulted in serious trouble for a party of champaign-burdened university students. In their eagerness to meet the ‘hello’ operators, the boys ventured into the very door yard of the police station. It seems that the party originally consisted of six. ‘Jimmie’ fell by the wayside on New Hampshire street and was sent home in a cab. The others straggled on up to Vermont where they waited for the Home Telephone operators. Seeing their condition the girls hastily concluded to break the ‘date’ and ran back into the offices. One of the boys boldly followed and, appropriating a comfortable chair, calmly sat down to wait their re-appearance. That was the fatal mistake. The girls telephoned to police headquarters and in less time than it took to re-adjust his badly deranged tie, two burly blue coats had him by either elbow. In the meantime the remainder of the party had wandered uncomprehendingly into the jail yard, where one of their number fell over an obstacle and remained prostrated until the officers arrived to help him into jail. When arrested he nervously removed a frat pin in an effort to conceal his identity. Repeated efforts were made for several hours after midnight to secure his release on bond, but the authorities were obdurate. This morning he paid $6.50 into the city treasury.”
