Thursday gala to fund student scholarships to visit Lawrence’s sister cities

Japanese, German and Greek cuisine will be served up Thursday as part of a fundraising gala to help finance scholarships for students planning to travel to Lawrence’s sister cities during the coming year.

The event is set for 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Castle Tea Room, 1307 Mass. Cost is $50.

Students are selected annually to travel to Eutin, Germany, and Hiratsuka, Japan, for cultural and educational exchanges. Lawrence’s third sister city — Iniades, Greece — has yet to entertain a student exchange.

“Students are expected to pay their way, but no student is denied the opportunity to travel due to financial considerations,” said Bob Moody, chairman of the gala and a former Lawrence mayor. “No student is denied because they can’t pay the full amount.”
