Joshua Bakarich, Eudora High School, has been named a commended student in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program. Bakarich will be presented a letter of commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corp., which conducts the program.

Central Junior High School’s Sam Beaulieu won the first-place individual trophy, and CJHS earned the third-place team trophy in the K-9 section of the Heatherwood Chess Tournament on Oct. 9 in Olathe. Other Lawrence medal winners, in K-9, were Joseph Miller, West Junior High School, fifth; George Wedge, CJHS, 14th; and Crystal Raub, Southwest Junior High School, 16th. Cordley’s Sebi Brown claimed the 11th place medal in K-6.

Four Lawrence teens will participate in the Fashionetta Debutante Ball sponsored by Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority Nov. 13 at the Topeka Holidome. Scholarships and awards will be presented for high-achieving African-American high school juniors and seniors in the Lawrence and Topeka areas.

Taylor Eubanks of Lawrence High School, and Kayla Presswood, Trei Dudley and Raven Graves, all of Free State High School, have been selected to participate in this year’s program.

Highlights include a dinner, followed by a talent show, program and dance. The event is open to the public. Tickets are available by calling Win Construction in Lawrence at 856-0797 or at Above All Book & Gift Store in Topeka.

Trinity Episcopal Church will host its 43rd annual Ploughman’s Lunch and Trinity Treasures Sale on Nov. 12. Doors open at 10 a.m. and close at 3 p.m. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The traditional “Ploughman’s” lunch is soup, cheese, bread and apple pie. There will be a bake sale as well as the Trinity Treasures sale of hand-knitted sweaters, scarves, toys, quilts and Christmas wreaths and ornaments. Proceeds will go to four local charities: C.A.S.A., Habitat for Humanity, LINK and Health Care Access.

The Lawrence High School Class of 1985 will have its 25th reunion Oct. 29 and 30. There will be a 5 p.m. tailgate north of the stadium for the Oct. 29 LHS/Free State High School football game.
