40 years ago: Board of Regents expresses regret at plane crash that killed 30 from Wichita State

At a meeting of the Kansas Board of Regents, the board members adopted a resolution expressing their sorrow and regret about the Oct. 2 airplane crash that took the lives of 30 people affiliated with Wichita State University. Board members also accepted a recommendation to bid for money to implement additional security measures on campus.

A bomb blast at a Kansas City police storefront center injured two officers. The explosive device had been placed or thrown at the doorway and had knocked a two-foot hole in the door, ripping it from its hinges.

A young St. Louis man, while visiting Lawrence, had climbed a tree to hang a tire swing, but he found it difficult to descend from the branch, which was 40 feet from the ground. The Lawrence Fire Department were called to assist in the rescue.
