Kansas education officials adopt new English, math standards

? State education officials have adopted English and math standards that have already been approved in 37 other states.

The Common Core Standards will put in place high expectations for students, said Kansas Education Commissioner Diane DeBacker.

She said aligning with other states “allows us to pool resources with those states in the development of assessments and to capitalize on the successful programs and strategies being used in other states.”

Curriculum and how students reach the standards will be made by local school officials.

The approval by the State Board of Education earlier this week clears the way for transitioning to the standards.
