25 years ago: Bank files suit against Opera House backers

The University State Bank had filed a lawsuit against the financial backers of the Lawrence Opera House, alleging that Opera House Investments Inc. had failed to pay the mortgage on the property and owed more than $186,000. The suit asked that the property be sold to satisfy the debts. Earlier in the summer, a partnership had announced their plans to purchase and remodel the building, restoring it as closely as possible to its 1911 condition. The purchase had not yet gone through because of the lawsuit.

Four days of freedom for two escaped prisoners from the state penitentiary ended as authorities surrounded them after spotting them driving on I-70 about 20 miles west of Topeka. It was later determined that the two men had apparently disguised themselves as construction workers in order to escape the prison.
