Topeka man faces 18 charges in connection with business burglaries

October 12, 2010

Douglas County prosecutors on Tuesday filed 18 charges against a Topeka man accused of breaking into five Lawrence businesses last Saturday and striking a police car while trying to avoid officers.

A judge Tuesday set bond at $75,000 for 53-year-old Arlando Gaines. Lawrence police allege Gaines broke into four businesses in the 2200 block of West 25th Street, near 25th and Iowa streets. He’s also accused of burglarizing Auto Plaza Car Wash in the 2800 block of Four Wheel Drive.

Police were called to the area at 11:30 p.m. Saturday to investigate a burglary. Officers found the suspect and began to pursue him when he tried to drive between two cars and struck one before he was arrested.

Gaines is charged with one count of cocaine possession and one count of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. He also faces obstruction and reckless driving charges. The remaining charges are either for burglary, theft or criminal damage to property.

Claymores, both swords and mines. Cut 'em if they stand & shoot 'em if they run.

Topeka robbed us and shot us this weekend. Is General Petraeus available for a few weeks to organize a defense?

Do you suppose Topeka has the same problem with Lawrencians coming around shooting up the place and robbing it blind?

this is ridiculous. PLEASE! we need to send topeka a bill for all of their citizens' criminal activity over here.
Our tax payers foot the bill for them. When is enough enough?

There aren't enough places in topeka to rob (that have any money left from the previous robbery)....and the cop cars aren't as fun to crash into!

I know this mans family and feel sorry for them to have to go through this as the ones I know are honest, hard working and good upstanding citizens. Unfortunatly for them this person decided to do some very stupid things and left them all with heartbreak and shame. I hope this man realizes what he is putting his family through.

Rooster - I know this man and feel sorry for the family. BUT, this is not the first time he has done something "stupid" like this. In fact, he has made a lifetime of it, so if he doesn't realize by now, he isn't going to.

With the legislature in town, its hard for a petty criminal to make a name for himself. What is a couple stores when you have an entire taxbase to fleece?

Gains was originally from Lawrence years ago. I know since he lived in the same area of town that I did. He was doing lots of burglaries then. I think he moved to Topeka to escape the watchful eye of the Lawrence Police Department.
