Topeka man faces 18 charges in connection with business burglaries

Douglas County prosecutors on Tuesday filed 18 charges against a Topeka man accused of breaking into five Lawrence businesses last Saturday and striking a police car while trying to avoid officers.

A judge Tuesday set bond at $75,000 for 53-year-old Arlando Gaines. Lawrence police allege Gaines broke into four businesses in the 2200 block of West 25th Street, near 25th and Iowa streets. He’s also accused of burglarizing Auto Plaza Car Wash in the 2800 block of Four Wheel Drive.

Police were called to the area at 11:30 p.m. Saturday to investigate a burglary. Officers found the suspect and began to pursue him when he tried to drive between two cars and struck one before he was arrested.

Gaines is charged with one count of cocaine possession and one count of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. He also faces obstruction and reckless driving charges. The remaining charges are either for burglary, theft or criminal damage to property.
