40 years ago: Draft calls may come to end within 3 years

A report from Washington, D.C., said that draft calls might end by the middle of 1973. According to the plan, men over 18 would still be required to register for the draft, but they would not be called. The Selective Service system would remain in effect for use in emergencies. Secretary of Defense Melvin R. Laird also said that President Nixon was planning an announcement later in the week about further U.S. troop withdrawals from Vietnam.

Nothing definite was resolved at a meeting between the City of Lawrence and officials from the Army Corps of Engineers concerning the city’s proposed landfill site on the North Lawrence Flood Control Levee. The city had the approval of the state for the new site, but was still working on objections from the Federal Water Quality Administration and seven or eight nearby residents in Grant Township. Meanwhile, the city was continuing to use the old landfill on Drag Strip Road.
