100 years ago: Cornerstone of new County Hospital to be laid soon

From the Lawrence Daily World for Oct. 12, 1910: “The corner stone of the new magnificent brick County Hospital which is being erected near Lawrence at an approximate cost of $25,000 will be laid next week. The new home for the county’s indigent and unfortunate is a magnificent building, with large commodious quarters adequate for all the demands likely to be made upon the county for many years to come. Its interior includes bed chambers, private dining rooms, reading rooms, sick wards, airy lounging rooms, plenty of bath rooms, and padded cells for the violent patients. It will be completed and ready for occupancy by January 1, 1911…. Kate Richards O’Hare, candidate for congress in this district against A. C. Mitchell, will speak Friday evening at 934 Mass. Mrs. O’Hare is a radical socialist and loses no opportunity to berate the older parties…. Two Ottawa men, Dr. A. L. Bell and Y. D. Buchholz, walked from Lawrence to that city yesterday in six hours. The distance is twenty-eight miles and starting at 9 o’clock they reached Ottawa at 4:50 having taken time out for dinner at Sibleyville…. With the World’s Championship series only six days away, interest in the results is becoming intense among Lawrence fans. The World has arranged to give a daily bulletin of the results during the series. The bulletins will be posted at the World office shortly after the conclusion of the games.”
