40 years ago: ‘Ballad of Black Jack’ premieres at Maple Leaf Festival

Baldwin’s Maple Leaf Festival, which in 1970 was also the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the city’s founding, was scheduled to feature the world premiere of a musical play, “The Ballad of Black Jack.” (The play has been a frequent, though not constant, fixture of the Maple Leaf since that time.)

A car driven by an 18-year-old resident ran through a Massachusetts Street intersection, struck a retaining wall at Central Junior High School, then ran across the school lawn before stopping. The driver said that the accelerator “stuck” when he was backing out of a parking spot on the west side of the 1300 block of Massachusetts.

A small ad invited readers to try “Lawrence’s Finest Hot Roast Beef Sandwich” at the “Burger Chef,” 814 Iowa.
