Heat take first game step in new era
Miami ? At Bayside, where it cost $15 to park for Heat games the past few years, they took $30 for Tuesday’s first preseason game. The capitalist pigs.
“It’s the LeBron factor,” the money taker said.
On the street corner, where scalpers hawked tickets at discounts in recent seasons, a street entrepreneur named Big Red held up a $75 lower-deck ticket for this meaningless game.
“Going for $150,” he said.
The media room was full. The game was live on NBA TV. The balcony curtains hiding unsellable seats in past years were gone, the cheapest seats full of people.
The recognized landscape is so changed it’s like stepping into one of Star Trek’s parallel universes. That was even before entering the locker room, where LeBron James stood before his locker, saying, “Watch your step.”
Ninety minutes before tipoff, on the floor before his locker, James’ jersey, headband, warmup suit and other game accessories were folded, ordered, layered and laid out in some meticulous fashion.
“For the last seven years, that’s how I’ve done it,” he said. “You could say it’s a little superstition. So you’ll have to learn not to step on it.”
That’s what this night was about. First steps. Learning moments. The full production that eventually will define a Heat experience wasn’t on display, though there were little signs of how this will work.
The introduced order of the Big Three, Heatles, Holy Trinity or whatever the Greatest Show on Surf eventually flies by was noted. LeBron James was the first player introduced from the huddle. Then Chris Bosh.
“And No. 3 … Dywa-a-a-ane Wade,” as the public-address announcer shouted, as Wade came out last among the starters in the Michael Jordan position.
Then for all of three minutes and 17 seconds it was a scene out of “It’s A Wonderful Life,” watching them run together for the first time against a live opponent. Even Detroit. Whoever its players are.
At that 197-second mark of this new era, Wade came limping across the court to the bench. He soon went to the locker room, holding his right hamstring.
“He tweaked it,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said of Wade’s hamstring. “We’ll know more later.”
On the court, it didn’t matter. LeBron hit a 20-footer. Bosh muscled inside. LeBron then spun through the lane for a full-force dunk that even he celebrated with an arm shake to bring the preseason crowd to life.
If we’re learning about this new world, James is, too. For instance, he knows just one route from home to the arena for now.
“Hopefully, I can find another route for when there’s traffic,” he said.
He talked for a bit about how excited he’s noticed this city is for the Heat.
“Hopefully, we can keep that going,” he said.
Ultimately, it’s not about the summer circus or what Charles Barkley said. That’s the great thing about sports.
“It’s still a game of basketball,” he said.
There remain questions there. Center Joel Anthony didn’t score and had two rebounds in 20 minutes on Tuesday. Is Erick Dampier still out there?
“We’re going to do whatever we need to get better,” James said before the game, the way athletes do every day in preseason.
James then scored 18 points. Bosh had 20 points. Wade sat in the locker getting treatment for his hamstring.
One small win. One small worry.
One small but noticeably more expensive night closer for fans waiting for the real thing.
