40 years ago: Officials investigate report of firearms on KU campus

Federal investigators announced that they had uncovered a number of violations in the wake of the WSU airplane crash. The plane’s engines had been dismantled and hauled to an airline facility where they would be studied to see if any malfunction had occurred. Questions had also arisen as to whether the Golden Eagle Aviation company had had FAA certification to operate the aircraft involved in the crash. According to an FAA official, the company had been certified to fly aircraft in a smaller weight category.

Kansas University officials were investigating a report that several persons had been seen carrying firearms into the Joseph R. Pearson residence hall. A witness had told KU police that he had seen several individuals carry rifles or shotguns and a large box into the hall. According to KU policy, weapons were to be registered with the resident director and locked in a location designated by him. In an unrelated story from Lewis Hall, a graduate student had reported the theft of a shotgun and accessories from a storage room in the hall.
