25 years ago: Safety of nail gun rental questioned

A year after his brother had been killed by a nail shot from a rented nail gun, a Lawrence resident was questioning the lack of legislation requiring rented nail guns to be inspected for safety. The regional director of the OSHA office in Wichita told the Journal-World that although he only knew of one such death in Kansas in the past 11 years, he did agree that they could be lethal.

Urban Mass Transportation Act officials had told Lawrence officials in January that $1.8 million in federal funds was available for transportation-related projects. But city officials were frustrated that, after having applied for the funds to cover most of the cost of buying four new buses, they were still getting the run-around from federal officials. One city official complained that, after guiding the city through the application word for word, the UMTA officials were later wanting to change the wording. A UMTA spokesperson disputed the claim of excessive red tape, saying that the city’s grant application was following routine procedures.
