40 years ago: WSU holds day of mourning

In the wake of the Oct. 2 crash of the airliner carrying many top Wichita State football players and personnel, the WSU campus canceled classes and held a day of mourning. A memorial ceremony was planned for that evening at Cessna Stadium, the university’s 31,500-seat football arena.

After a two-month boom, the construction industry in Lawrence had hit a big decline in September. Totals in building permits for July and August had topped $12 million, but only $763,425 in permits were issued in September, and almost half that amount had been from one permit, a $358,500 one issued for Fleetwood Enterprises, a builder of mobile homes.

Janis Joplin had been found dead in her apartment in a San Francisco suburb. An autopsy had been ordered to determine the cause of death. “There were no drugs in the room, only tequila, vodka and wine,” a police spokesman had said at the time. However, investigators later confirmed that they had found small amounts of heroin and marijuana, and that the singer’s arm had shown recent needle marks.
