25 years ago: Possibly intoxicated man falls off Kansas River bridge

A man, believed to have been intoxicated, fell off the Kansas River bridge. He had been hanging on the outside of the bridge railing when police had been called to the scene. Officers had attempted to reach him, but he had fallen into the river. He had resisted attempts to help him out of the river, simply swimming to shore and, after refusing medical treatment, walking home with a friend.

A local man who had been arrested for armed robbery had been released from custody. The man had reportedly stepped in front of a car earlier in the week and pointed a pistol at the driver, demanding first a drink (which the driver was not able to provide) and then cash and jewelry. The district attorney did not give any reason for having released the man, saying “My decision is based on what I learned since the time of the arrest and I don’t have any problems with what I did at all.” He also said that he had heard that the victim in the case was not interested in pursuing legal action.
