Fall forecast: Wearable, covetable wardrobe updates

First, the bad news: Summer is over. The days of basking (or broiling) under the sun’s rays and luxuriating in the chlorinated breeze off the community pool are done. Now the good news: From the looks of designer collections, e-boutiques and store shelves, the fashion world is working harder than ever to woo consumers this fall, churning out clothes, shoes and accessories that are not just wearable but also covetable.

• Last fall saw the return of a ladylike wardrobe, ushered in by the popularity of cable television’s “Mad Men.” For a second act, designers such as Marc Jacobs turned out structured bags and prim silhouettes — glamorous touches that nod to the 1960s and ’70s.

• Ankle-grazing skirts made a splash at Dries Van Noten and Max Mara, a decidedly elegant deviation from the micro mini. As the weather cools, pair these flowing columns of silk and chiffon with snug tweed blazers or loose, off-the-shoulder sweaters.

• Chloe designer Hannah MacGibbon draped models in variations on the classic camel coat, ranging from a double-breasted overcoat to a quilted leather bomber. A budget-friendly alternative: H&M’s wool version. $149 at H&M stores.

• Rough-and-tumble boots and biker-chic stilettos have had a long moment in the spotlight, but for fall, footwear takes a turn for the dainty. Take a cue from designer Miuccia Prada’s beribboned kitten heels, and look for demure pairs with bow detailing, such as these Kate Spade Karlisle pumps. $320 at www.endless.com.

• Warm, rich metallic hues such as copper, bronze and burnished gold added a sheen of sophistication to fall collections from Akris and Balmain. Beauty buffs can get the look with NARS vintage nail polishes: Try King Kong, a coppery brown. $16 at www.narscosmetics.com, available in October.
