40 years ago: Vinland Presbyterian Church building for sale
The old Vinland Presbyterian Church was up for sale, and the eventual buyer would have the choice of either renovating the 90-year-old church or bulldozing it. The building, which had been abandoned by the church about 25 years previously, was selling for $2,300 including the three-fourths of an acre on which it sat. Restoration costs were estimated to be at least $5,000. The church had been constructed around 1878-79, and Dr. James Naismith had served the church on and off from 1914 to 1918.
Seventy-five high school bands with more than 6,000 young musicians were pictured assembled on the new Tartan Turf for the annual Band Day ceremonies at KU’s Memorial Stadium. The musical endeavor, which had followed a downtown parade attended by thousands, was directed by acting KU band director George Boberg with assistance from Prof. Russell Wiley, who had originated Band Day 25 years earlier.
