25 years ago: Work promised to improve apartments, delaying evictions

City officials had temporarily delayed their move to force tenants out of the Pinecrest Apartments at 2565 Redbud Lane. The city had deemed the apartments unsafe for human habitation [see OHT for Oct. 2, 1985], but Gene Shaughnessy, chief building inspector, said he had talked with a representative of the apartment complex owner, who had said that work would be done to repair the code violations. Some of the apartments did not have heat or hot water, stairs were missing handrails, hallways were not lighted, and some plumbing and electrical work was possibly installed improperly.

The Lawrence Board of Zoning Appeals approved two variances to clear the way for a new Haskell Indian Catholic Student Center. Representatives of the proposed center were planning to use a house at 2301 Barker for the center and keep the neighboring house at 147 E. 23rd for residential use unless the center needed to expand in the future.
