40 years ago: Reported kidnapping apparently a hoax

A reported kidnapping at the Gibson’s Discount Center parking lot at 2525 Iowa had apparently been a hoax, according to Lawrence police. A woman had reported seeing a man stuffed into the trunk of a car while another man apparently eluded the captors and ran away, but after a thorough search of the surrounding area, police found nothing and eventually abandoned the search.

A Kansas University policeman pulled over a vehicle being driven on a sidewalk near Oliver Residence Hall. The driver explained that he had been ordered to drive the car on the sidewalk as part of a fraternity initiation rite.

Items valued at $121, including a silver bowl, candle, and kneeling pads, were taken from the Trinity Episcopal Church at 1023 Vermont. Other thefts in the area were reported from the Hodge Podge, 15 W. Ninth, and Carol Lee Products, 30th and Haskell, where burglars rolled a safe outside, peeled it with a chisel, but found nothing inside.
