40 years ago: LHS back to an uneasy calm following suspensions

The Lawrence area fell short of setting a record in total rainfall in September. The month ended about one good rain shy of the mark. After a drenching 4.39-inch rainfall on Sept. 22, followed by another .16 the next day, the monthly total was up to 10.36. However, this was just short of the 1949 record of 11.49.

A shooting incident was under investigation in Lawrence, where five spent cartridges were recovered by police at the College Hill Manor Apartments, 1741 W. 19th.

An uneasy calm prevailed at Lawrence High School, where racially-oriented disturbances had resulted in the suspension of 37 students. School officials said that 24 black students and 13 white students had been barred from the school for a period of at least five days.

With the help of a federal grant totaling $8,832, Lawrence police officers were provided by the city with more equipment to control civil disturbances. The new riot control equipment included walkie-talkies, protective helmets and plastic shields, and gas masks.
