40 years ago: KU buildings await their annual Christmas decorations

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 30, 1970:

  • Kansas University was expected to begin putting up its Christmas decorations on this day. Lights would be put up on Chancellor Laurence Chalmers’ home. Other buildings receiving decorations would include Watkins Memorial Hospital, Danforth Chapel, Hoch Auditorium, and Strong Hall, which would erect its traditional Christmas tree in the rotunda.
  • The U.S. Census Bureau had released its final figures on the 1970 census. According to their numbers, the population of the United States as of April 1, 1970, had reached 204,765,770. The state of California, which had had a population increase of 4.2 million, was to gain five more seats in the House of Representatives, while New York was to lose two seats.
  • Atty. Gen. Elect Vern Miller confirmed the appointment of Leonard D. Munker, Wichita attorney, as chief assistant attorney general. Munker had graduated from KU in 1960 and from the KU Law School in 1965.
