25 years ago: Unexpected snowfall greets Lawrence residents on Thanksgiving Day

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 28, 1985:

  • Some Lawrence residents who might have welcomed a white Christmas were not as grateful for the white Thanksgiving that started the holiday weekend. Fortunately, just half an inch had blanketed the ground, and no more snow was expected in the immediate future. Elsewhere in the nation, heavy rains and flooding caused hundreds to evacuate in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, while a blizzard in Wyoming brought 86 mph winds and zero visibility.
  • The Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen (LINK) in the basement of St. John Catholic Church, 1229 Vt., was ready for 300 to 400 guests for Thanksgiving dinner. Seventy-five volunteers and donors had spent weeks planning the dinner. As the final tables were being set up, schoolchildren arrived to carefully arrange their pine-cone turkey centerpieces. Gerry Collie, manager of the meat department at the 27th and Iowa Dillons, had arrived for his volunteer stint of carving the 15 turkeys. The feast also included 11 gallons of gravy, 25 pans of dressing, 35 dozen rolls, 12 gallons of relishes, 45 pies (apple and pumpkin) and 30 gallons of milk.
