Lawrence community invited to activities celebrating Hanukkah

The Chabad Center for Jewish Life in Lawrence has announced plans for its annual Hanukkah celebration.

This festivities will include events that highlight and celebrate the traditions and history of the Jewish community. Activities are set to begin on Wednesday, the first day of the eight-day holiday.

Community members can gather at the Kansas Union on the Kansas University campus to watch the annual lighting of the 9-foot crimson and blue Grand Menorah. The events begins at 7:30 p.m. and will be followed by bowling at the Jaybowl.

Other events include a downtown menorah lighting on Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. at South Park, featuring live music and dancing.

An oil press workshop will also be offered during the holiday. The workshop will allow participants to squeeze and refine their own olive oil by hand. The hands-on activity will be offered twice — at 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 3 and Dec. 7 at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt.
