An 18-year-old Lenexa woman was injured after an early morning rollover crash Wednesday in far western Lawrence.

Sgt. Matt Sarna, a Lawrence police spokesman, said officers were called a 2:35 a.m. to a reported accident with a car on fire at Clinton Parkway and Lake Pointe Drive, just east of Clinton Lake.

No one was inside the vehicle, and Sarna said the driver had briefly left the area. The driver, Mary K. Majewski of Lenexa, later returned once officers arrived.

She said no other passengers were in the car when the wreck occurred.

Sarna said officers determined her 1996 Chevrolet Lumina was headed west on Clinton Parkway when she drove left of the center line, struck the median and became airborne over a roundabout there.

The car rolled onto the south side of Clinton Parkway. Majewski got out of the car before it caught fire.

Majewski was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and later transferred to a Kansas City area hospital. Sarna said she had a back injury that is not believed to be life-threatening.

He said officers were still investigating the circumstances up to the accident to determine if speed and alcohol contributed.

Girl needs to go buy a lottery ticket ASAP. She's extremely lucky.

Westbound on Clinton Parkway, going uphill, hits the median, becomes airborne, crosses the roundabout, comes to a landing in the eastbound land or south side of Clinton Parkway and comes to rest after rolling over on the south side of Clinton Parkway.

As a proud graduate of the Jethro Bodine School of Sums, how fast would a car weighing 4,000 lbs have to be traveling to launch airborne over the roundabout and cover the 100+ feet of travel?

The closest answer without going over wins an all expense paid trip around the roundabout at Lake Pointe Drive.

4000 pounds? She was driving a Chevy Lumina, not a Ford Expedition. Try closer to 2000 pounds.

Still, your point remains. She must have been going pretty fast for that stretch of road.

Most passenger cars are in the ~3500-3800lb range...slowponder's 4000lb guess is not far off.

Ought, Ought, carry Ought ...

Attention self-appointed editors: No comments on the use of "western Lawrence"as a location? Seems like we always read "west Lawrence" around here, sometimes "Old West Lawrence". I kind of like western Lawrence ... conjures up visions of a young gal leaving the saloon, dodging a varmint in the road, getting her spurs caught in the floor mat and hurtling over that roundabout like a stage coach into a gulch. (hope she's okay, but the image is intriguing)

"western lawrence" had the same imagery! lol.

clearly this poor defenseless damsel is not at fault!

if Merrill and his band of roundabout touters didn't have there way, she'd still have a healthy, unburnt, car!

clearly: I blame the roundabout!

agree: her luck is really in now! this was waaaaaaaaaaaay less than she could've suffered.

merrill and his "bunch" probably haven't been to western Lawrence in months or years, but they sure can dictate how we are to live - in western Lawrence.
