Lawrence police officers seized a 9-mm handgun early Sunday morning from a vehicle that was parked in the 1000 block of New Hampshire Street. Sarna said officers on foot patrol were checking vehicles when they observed the gun on the front floor board of a white Chevrolet.

Officers talked to the vehicle’s owner and a 19-year-old Manhattan resident who said the gun was his. Police did not arrest anyone but seized the gun and forwarded a copy of the report to prosecutors, who will make a decision about charges.

Why did they seize his gun ? Was it stolen ? It is not against the law to have a gun in your vehicle as long as it is in plain sight. What about all the people who carry rifles and shotguns in the gun rack in the back windows of their pickup trucks ? Are they subject to seizure also ?

If they are within so many feet of a bar they are. That is one of those City Ordinances that cover just about everywhere downtown.

I didn't realize we had so many police officers that some of them with nothing better to do just walk around with flashlights looking into people's cars.
