Fort Leavenworth celebrates Native American Heritage Month with featured speaker from Lumbee Tribe

? An Army major who is a member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina is the featured speaker at a Native American Heritage event at Fort Leavenworth.

Maj. Michael Marciniak will speak during a luncheon ceremony Friday at Fort Leavenworth’s Hunt Lodge. Marciniak is studying at the Army’s Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth.

The Lumbee Tribe is one of the largest Native American tribes east of the Mississippi. According to the tribe’s website, today’s Lumbee are descendants of the Cheraw Tribe and have lived in and around North Carolina’s Robeson County since the early 18th century.

The event will also feature a dance troupe from Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence.
