Report: Kentucky AD, Kansas native Mitch Barnhart finalist for KU position

A national sports blog reported Sunday night that University of Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart is a finalist for the same position at Kansas University, but Barnhart — a Kansas native — said in a statement he has not been contacted formally by KU.

“We have received calls from friends and supporters of the university about the athletic director position at Kansas,” Barnhart’s statement said. “I have not been formally contacted by the University of Kansas. I am 100 percent focused on UK Athletics.”

Barnhart graduated from Ottawa University in 1981, and his wife is a KU graduate.

The national sports blog “Sports by Brooks” produced a story Sunday night saying Barnhart will interview with KU in early December, according to two Southeastern Conference administrators who were not named.

The blog also named Tulsa Athletics Director Bubba Cunningham as a finalist.

UK spokesman Jay Blanton said Monday the university and President Lee Todd would not comment on the report, nor would they release any statement on the matter, according to the Lexington (Ky.) Herald Leader.

Todd, who hired Barnhart nine years ago, has announced he will retire in June.
