Sheriff’s officers looking for driver involved in injury accident early Saturday

Douglas County Sheriff’s officers are looking for a driver who ran away from a three-vehicle crash where three people were injured early Saturday morning east of Lawrence.

Sgt. Steve Lewis, a sheriff’s spokesman, said at 4 a.m. Saturday a westbound 1995 white Pontiac Trans Am attempted to pass another car in the 1800 block of North 1500 Road, which is an extension of 15th Street.

The pass occurred where the gravel road turns to pavement, and the driver of the Pontiac lost control and struck an eastbound 1998 Audi, driven by 24-year-old Trinity Carpenter of Kansas City, Kan.

Lewis said after the crash the driver of the Pontiac ran away and left three passengers in the car. Two passengers were injured, Elliott Black, 32 of Kansas City, Kan., and Kyla Johnson, 22, of Lawrence.

Lewis said Carpenter, Black and Johnson were taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He said Johnson was later flown via helicopter ambulance to Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., with serious injuries. A hospital spokesman said information about her condition Monday morning was not available due to the hospital’s privacy policy.

Lewis said Carpenter and Black’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Sheriff’s officers on Monday were still looking for the driver of the Pontiac, Lewis said.

The driver of the westbound vehicle the Pontiac tried to pass took evasive action and that car went into the ditch, but no one was injured, he said.

Lewis said anyone with information about the accident can call the sheriff’s office at 785-841-0007 or Crime Stoppers at 785-843-TIPS.
