40 years ago: Lawrence described as having serious drug problem

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 15, 1970:

  • In the first of a series of articles entitled “The Lawrence Drug Problem,” county attorney-elect Mike Elwell said that the drug problem in Lawrence was as bad as any city in Kansas, and that it was growing more serious. Elwell said that law enforcement officials were aware of who the drug-dealers were but that they were hampered in making arrests due to lack of funds and central organization. He said that dealers in the community included “30 to 40 in the group which hangs around the Rock Chalk Cafe… Most are not students and have no jobs.”
  • In a photo, fans at the recent Kansas-Oklahoma football game were shown huddled in coats, hats, and blankets. The temperature at Memorial Stadium had hovered around the freezing mark, with a wind chill of zero to ten above.
