November 13, 2010

Paola — Three big Paola plays doomed the Baldwin High football team on Friday night in the Class 4A state playoffs.

Paola (9-3) put an end to Baldwin’s season with a 21-6 victory in a cold, rainy game that resulted in sloppy plays and limited offensive stats.

Paola’s Skylar Hawkins broke a 70-yard run on the third play of the game for the opening score.

In the second quarter, Paola blocked a Baldwin punt and recovered it at the BHS six-yard line.

The third big play was a 26-yard interception return for a touchdown by Tyler Hieber during the last minute of the first half.

Neither team scored in the second half.

Baldwin (10-2) moved the ball in the second half, but lost a fumble on the opening drive.

Paola stopped Baldwin’s final drive of the game.

Paola will play Louisburg next Friday in the state semifinals.
