U.S. Army Spc. Thomas A. Moffitt was killed Oct. 24 when his unit was attacked in the Sarobi district of the Paktika Province in southeastern Afghanistan.

Moffitt’s parents, John and Brenda Moffitt, of Wichita; older brother, Jacob, a student at Kansas University; and grandparents Bob and Janice Diepenbrock, of Alma, attended Friday’s ceremony with dozens of other family, friends and military personnel.

Just before the graveside services, the Army posthumously awarded Thomas Moffitt with the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his service in Afghanistan.

He was an infantryman assigned to Delta Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division from Fort Campbell, Ky.

On Oct. 29, Governor Parkinson ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in Moffitt’s honor. A memorial service was held Oct. 30 at Central Community Church in Wichita.
