Overland Park ? A teller at a suburban Kansas City bank told police a man kidnapped him from the parking lot of his apartment complex early Wednesday and forced him to open the bank, which the man then robbed.

Another bank employee found the teller tied to a chair inside the U.S. Bank branch in Overland Park, Kan., just before 7:30 a.m. FBI spokeswoman Bridget Patton said the teller told investigators the robber kidnapped him between 1 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. and forced him to drive around before taking him to the bank.

While acknowledging that the robbery was unusual, she said it’s not unprecedented.

“We have heard of these types of bank robberies before, but it’s unusual to see one in our area,” she said.

Authorities would not disclose how much money had been taken.

Overland Park Police spokesman Jim Weaver said the teller, who is in his 20s, had been slapped in the face and had a bloody nose, but otherwise wasn’t injured. His car was found later Wednesday morning about five blocks west of the bank, officials said.

“I cannot think of another incident, except many years ago, where people were abducted like that,” Weaver said. “All of our jurisdictions have had bank robberies, but not like this.”

He said the robber had a knife, but no guns were involved in the abduction.

The robber is described as a white man, 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall with a medium build. He was wearing dark clothes and what looked like a Halloween mask.

Weaver said nothing is being ruled out in the investigation, which has been taken over by the FBI.

Patton said U.S. Bank is offering a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the robber.
